Look, I understand you might be wondering why I’ve made a whole post dedicated to general hygiene, as if people don’t know how to shower. BUT, as a social worker I am programed to ensure that everyone has a basic, solid foundation that they can build upon for the rest of their lives. And that’s what this post is. It’s just to make sure that everyone has easy access to the information they need to build on.
Who knows, you may learn a thing or two…
Bathe every one to two days.
You need to do this for you and for everyone around you. Cleanse yourself of the dirt and grime of life as needed, but definitely make sure you bathe every one to two days. This is for health reasons, like washing away germs and potential infections/illnesses, as well as to prevent you from smelling funky. Nobody really wants to be around anyone that smells musty.
Use a moisturizing body soap.
Cheap body washes that contain alcohol can dry up and damage your skin!!!
A moisturizing body wash doesn’t have to be expensive. Think classic bars of Dove soap or other simple body washes that don’t have a mile-long ingredients list.
Hoe Tip: Ingredients to try to avoid include parabens, phthalates, synthetic colors, and formaldehyde as all of these ingredients are considered to be carcinogens AKA cancer causing!!
Don’t use a loofah more than once.
I didn’t know repeated use of the same loofah is “bad” until recently and I’m devastated. Loofah’s stay damp even after you’ve left the shower and that attracts a plethora of nasty ass bacteria. It makes total sense, but the truth still hurts.
Same goes for wash cloths. General rule: if it has to be left wet or damp, don’t use it again.
DON’T PUT SOAP UP YOUR VAGINA 🗣🗣🗣
The vagina is a self-cleaning organ and putting anything up there can throw off your natural pH balance.
Let your vagina do its job, I promise it’s good at it.
Let your vagina smell the way it is * supposed * to smell. If anyone is turned off by the natural smell of pussy then they don’t need to be near a pussy. Period.
Feel free to gently wash your vulva and pubic hair though.
Thoroughly, but gently, wash out your vulva and make sure you rinse any soap from your pubic area.
WASH YOUR ASS 🗣
Don’t be scared, get in there.
Scrub your feet.
If you truly care about yourself you’ll make sure your feet are clean and free of fucking dirt. I’m not saying you need to splurge on a pedicure, but you do need to pay attention to them.
Have a skin care routine.
A quality skin care routine is different for everyone and it will take some research to figure out what’s best for you and your skin! Typically, a basic skin care routine should consist of a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer (preferably with SPF).
You should definitely do your routine everyone morning and do your best to implement it at night to.
Hoe Tip: NO MATTER WHAT you need to at the very least wash your make up off before going to bed. Your pores will thank you.
Wash and condition your hair as needed.
Don’t over wash your hair (I wash mine once a week), but do condition every time you get it wet (especially if you have curly hair). Pay attention to product buildup, it’s your best indicator for figuring out if you need to wash your hair or not. And if you’ve got white girl hair, watch out for greasy hair too.
You know what’s best for you and your hair!!
And if you don’t, stay tuned for hair care posts that will be posted soon!
Make sure you scrub behind your ears while you’re at it.
Deodorant. Use it.
Put deodorant on every single day. Depending on your pits, choose between a powder or gel deodorant. I sweat more than the average bitch and I’ve found that a spray powder deodorant works best for me. It might take some experimenting to figure out which type and brand works best for you, but it’s something that you need to know.
Moisturize every day!!
I’m really bad at this, but moisturizing every day, twice a day is a solid tip for healthy, glowing skin.
You need a body lotion and a face moisturizer. Yes, you need one for each. Body lotion can be pretty generic, but you need to find the right type of moisturizer for your face. There’s different types for oily skin, sensitive skin, dry skin, combination skin, etc. Find what’s best for your face type and moisturize every day, in the morning and at night.
Hoe Tip: Find a facial moisturizer for morning and night. Night creams are heavy and do more repair work on your skin while you sleep which is essential after a long day of makeup, sun exposure, sweat, etc.
Brush your teeth morning and night with a quality toothbrush and toothpaste.
Nasty admission: I suck at remembering to brush my teeth before bed. To make up for this, I go HAM when brushing my teeth in the morning… but still… I’m working on it 🙈.
Brush your teeth, spend at least a few minutes doing it, and make sure you brush ‘em good, okay?
Scrub tf outta yo tongue.
Bad breath comes straight from your tongue!!!
It should not be white/discolored.
I honestly spend more time brushing my tongue than I do my teeth. Scrub it with toothpaste and your toothbrush and try to get the layers of germs, plaque, and yeast off of that hoe. It’s a great time to practice subduing your gag reflex too 😜.
Do laundry regularly and stop wearing dirty clothes.
I don’t think I need to explain why you need to be wearing clean clothes over dirty clothes. There is some wiggle room when it comes to jeans and I honestly think it comes down to personal preference. I generally wash my jeans after every one to two wears.
Also, having a huge pile of dirty laundry (or even clean, unsorted laundry) is not cute!!!
Switch out your towels once a week.
Damp towels will accumulate bacteria and germs and you don’t want to be rubbing bacteria back onto your skin after getting all clean in the shower.
Wash and change your sheets every two-four weeks.
Especially your pillowcases as a dirty pillowcase can cause you to break out and/or get sick.
Think about all the hair and face oil, dirt, and grime that gets caked onto your pillowcase…
Pick up your living space.
You’ll feel better hygienically and mentally, I promise.
You don’t even have to do that much. Just do things like picking up your clothes off the floor, putting your dirty dishes in the sink (bonus points if you actually do them), having a clear bathroom counter, etc.
Clean and disinfect your kitchen every day and your bathroom once a week.
Please y’all. BACTERIA. GERMS. ILLNESSES. They all love to live in kitchens and bathrooms.
The rule I try to stick to in my apartment is to make sure the dishes are done before going to bed and cleaning my bathroom on the weekends. Use a disinfectant spray on your countertops and sinks, scrub your shower/bathtub, and clean the toilet. That’s it, it’s not that time consuming, especially if you keep up with it.
CLEAN YOUR MAKE UP BRUSHES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
Dirty brushes = dirty skin
Soak and scrub them in a mixture 1 part dish soap to 1 part olive oil, rinse with warm water, then air dry.
Last but not least… DRINK WATER.
It’ll keep you clean and healthy from the inside out.
