Self care is very fucking important.
We all should know that taking care of ourselves is essential to taking care of everything else we need to be taking care of. The disconnect often comes due to time constraints. We be hella busy sometimes all the time. I always hear that we need to take time to rejuvenate and relax, which I am all for. BUT… sometimes I just don’t have the time. Which is why I’ve done a little research and experimenting to come up with a QUICK SELF CARE SHOWER ROUTINE. My showers with this routine generally take between 10-25 minutes!
This is for women who are BOOKED and BUSY.
This particular form of self-care is designed to be incorporated into your morning routine, before bed, really just whenever you normally shower. I do this routine while getting ready in the morning and have already noticed an improvement in my day!
Always remember that you can tweak this routine to better suit you and your psyche! This is for YOU!!
What you’ll need:
- A moisturizing body wash or quality soap
- A face mask
- Conditioner, comb, hair tie
- A loofah
- Aroma therapy or candles (optional)
- A razor (optional)
First things first, you need to set the mood. The mood we’re going for is calm, relaxing, and soul soothing (obviously). Do your best to achieve ambient lighting, which you can do by using natural light if your bathroom has a window, by only utilizing the overhead shower light (if your bathroom has one), and/or by lighting any candles that you have. This is also the time when you set up any aromatherapy essential oils and turn on your music. Choose music that works for you, if rapping along to trap music is therapeutic to you then go ahead and get it poppin. If chill beats and soothing soul tunes are what you need to relax then that’s what you turn on. Personally, depending on my mood, my go-to shower sounds are chill beats, a playlist of female rappers with songs to get me into the mindset of being THAT bitch, or a playlist that turns my bathroom into an after-hours strip club. But like I said, it’s up to you and what you think you need to get yourself into the right mindset to start the day. What I will say is that you do need to be * thoughtful * in the music you choose. Thoughtfulness is a big component of self-care.
Also, do what you can to declutter your shower space. There’s so much research that says a decluttered space leads to a decluttered mind!
The shower itself should be warm to hot water. Make sure your water is to your liking BEFORE you get in. Hot water relaxes your muscles and will help melt away all the physical stress weighing down your body. The steam from the hot water is proven to deep cleanse the skin, help your body eliminate toxins, helps your sinuses, enhances circulation, etc. etc. The list of the benefits of steam goes on and on…
Most importantly though (to me lol), is to prepare your towels and make sure everything you need is in the shower before you get in. Nothing will annoy me more than getting in the shower and forgetting something, then having to get back out dripping all over everything to go and get it. Same with reaching for my towel after I’m done showering only to realize it isn’t there… Point is, make sure you have everything you need so that your mood isn’t even in jeopardy of being ruined by small inconveniences (I’m petty like that so small shit has a 50/50 chance of setting me off).
Now on to the actual QUICK SELF CARE SHOWER ROUTINE.
I all about streamlining efficiency. You want to use what little time you have W I S E L Y. I find the most efficient, and quickest, routine is to start with the most time-consuming thing and work your way down to the least.
This means I start with my hair. I take a few seconds to really make sure my hair is wet and to enjoy the initial moments of stepping into the shower. This is when you incorporate a quick 30 second to 1 minute scalp massage. The hot water and the massage has two major benefits. The first is that consistent scalp massages stimulates hair growth. The second is that this will help break up any product build up in your hair. After this, condition your hair with your favorite conditioner, detangle, and put your hair up into a bun. Doing this first thing allows the conditioner to have the most time possible to really do its job and there’s also the added bonus of the hot steam helping deep condition your hair!
Disclaimer: this self-care routine is not for wash days. I’m a naturalista so my wash days consist of pre-poos, oils rinses, extra-long deep conditioning, etc. which cannot be done on any given morning or right before bed. If you can fit in the hair cleansing process then go ahead, but… it’s just not realistic for me.
Next up: your face.
This self care routine utilizes a face mask, which like conditioner, is also something that needs time to set in to really work. First and foremost, thoroughly wash your face with whatever works best for your skin. Once clean, apply your face mask as directed by whatever it says on the package. And once again, the steam from the shower is only helping your face mask do its work!
Moving onto the body.
This is where I start to incorporate meditation and positive thinking. As you wash your body, hopefully with a moisturizing body wash or quality soap, visualize that you’re washing away all your stresses and anxieties, your insecurities, yours fears, and your mistakes. Focus your mind on eliminating any negative energy through the act of physically cleaning your body.
Using a loofah exfoliates your skin which will leave you feeling and looking refreshed. When washing, I start with my upper body in the order of scrubbing my arm pits, chest, and then down to my torso and back. Then I wash my pubic area, vulva, and booty. Next I move down to my thighs and calves, and finish with making sure my feet and thoroughly cleaned (get in between those toes, please!).
Cleansing every part of your body thoughtfully while thinking positively about your upcoming day and allowing all your negative energy to rinse down the drain is fundamental to making this a self-care shower routine and not just a regular shower.
Optional: this is when you shave if that’s something you want to do. I would definitely recommend oil to shave. Remember to incorporate thoughtfulness and positive thinking while doing this.
It’s time to wrap this whole thing up with rinsing and more meditation.
As you rinse your body and face, be sure to visualize the water and soap rinsing off any and all negativity attached to you and allow yourself the freedom of letting it all go down the drain. Now it’s time to let your hair down and rinse your hair while still in this meditative mindset. Focus on the clarity and lightness achieved by rinsing the products from your hair and body and keep that feeling with you as you leave your shower behind and begin the rest of your day.
Disclaimer: this QUICK SELF-CARE SHOWER ROUTINE is by no means extensive, it’s not going to solve all your problems, and won’t cure your anxiety or depression (or whatever you may be dealing with). BUT it is a way for you to thoughtfully and unabashedly take some time, as little time that may be, for yourself! Anything is better than nothing in my book. 🤷🏽♀️
Let me know if you try this super simple routine and if it works for you! What other ways do you guys practice self care when you’re short on time?
